Alexander County board approves continuing resolution to keep schools operating while budget is finalized

The Alexander County Board of Education voted unanimously to approve a continuing resolution to fund school operations for fiscal year 2026–27 at the same spending levels as the 2025–26 budget until the board adopts a full 2026–27 budget.
CFO Sharon Mappy told the board the continuing resolution is intended to prevent an operational lapse if the district and state budgets are not finalized before the new fiscal year. “If we do not have a budget… this continuing resolution allows us to continue with operations until we get a budget approved,” Mappy said. She added that the resolution limits spending to the same levels used in 2025–26 but allows the district to apply any salary increases that have been approved.
The motion to approve the resolution was made by Matthew Reese and seconded by Anthony Mlan; the chair called for voices in favor and the resolution passed. The board did not read an itemized roll-call tally into the record during the motion; officials recorded the outcome as approval.
Board members and staff said the measure is intended as a temporary safeguard so payroll, contracts and core services can continue uninterrupted while district leaders complete a full budget for board adoption.
Next steps: the district will continue preparing the full 2026–27 budget for board review and adoption when negotiations and final revenue projections are complete.
