Board to spotlight students at meetings starting next school year after ad hoc committee proposal

Riverview School District leaders told the education and student life committee they will change board meeting practices to spotlight students more often beginning with the 2026–27 school year.
Neil English, the superintendent, reported the ad hoc committee agreed on three measures: have elementary students lead the Pledge of Allegiance with shirts ordered for selected students; ensure in‑person student attendance at meetings for student life updates so parents can attend and be recognized; and schedule building-focused study sessions (October, January, April) to showcase student accomplishments. Mr. English said those changes will take effect at the start of the 2026–27 year and calendar reminders have been sent to principals.
The committee praised the planning group and thanked administration for the work. The board adjourned and moved on to a 2:00 p.m. policy meeting.
