Riverview School District officials announced a new kindergarten bike curriculum after receiving a grant that supplied Strider-style balance bikes, racks and classroom materials.
Dr. Monroe, elementary administrator, told the education and student life committee on April 8 that the All Kids Bike program from North Dakota arrived with two wheeled racks (each holding 12 balance bikes), a teacher bike, helmets and a curriculum for kindergartners. Local sponsor RDIC and engineering firm Canepa Engineers assisted with assembly, she said. "The kids were so excited," Dr. Monroe said, describing a surprise reveal under a parachute and the initial ride-around exercise.
The district reported the program is set to begin with classroom instruction and practice sessions; a staff member will run the program and work with students over multiple lessons. Dr. Monroe said some families initially assumed the bikes would be taken home, and the district may seek further funding to provide a bike for each kindergartner upon program completion.
The program rollout includes a teacher-training component and helmets; the district confirmed Coach K and Miss Cantero will be involved in instruction and ongoing oversight. Administrators said they are collecting photos and a social-media blurb from a staff member (Nicole) to publicize the launch.
The committee did not vote on the grant during the meeting. Next steps identified by staff include implementing the curriculum in kindergarten PE and exploring additional funding to expand take‑home opportunities for students.
