Village staff presented an early draft ordinance to establish a Veterans Commission intended to support local veterans' programs, coordinate fundraising for a veterans memorial and serve as a permanent advisory body to the village board.
Administrator G said the commission would likely have seven voting members appointed by the mayor with trustee advice, include representatives in good standing from local VFW and American Legion posts, and assign a non-voting staff liaison. "The purpose of the ordinance is to establish a veterans commission that will serve as another advisory body ... maintaining a Veterans Memorial once constructed," Administrator G said.
Trustees discussed term lengths and staggering, whether commissioners must be veterans or whether strong non-veteran supporters could serve, and residency requirements. Several trustees suggested giving preference to veterans but leaving appointments open to supporters to maintain volunteer capacity. Trustees asked staff to return a revised draft that clarifies residency, term lengths, staggering and whether certain seats should be reserved for veterans or local posts.
No ordinance vote occurred; staff will refine the draft and return it for board action.
