West Chicago proclaims April 2026 Autism Acceptance Month; alderwoman seeks community group

The reading highlighted the council's intent to promote understanding, inclusion and support for individuals on the autism spectrum and their families.
Alderwoman Julieta Alcántar-Garcia, who the mayor thanked for spearheading the effort, spoke about her experience as a mother of an autistic son, Christian, and the need for community supports. "I'm looking to create something, maybe a community group," Alcántar-Garcia said, inviting ideas from residents and saying she wants every person in West Chicago to have their basic needs met.
Council members and guests gathered for a photo with the proclamation following the reading. The proclamation was noted and the council continued with other agenda items.
