Seaside's Stepping Stones camp reports exits to treatment and shelters as occupancy grows

At the May 11 Seaside City Council meeting, Kenny, representing the Stepping Stones community operated under a local provider, reported that the site is serving approximately 32 people (including multiple couples) and that program partners have helped several residents move to shelters, treatment and more stable housing.

Kenny described recent case progress: some residents have transitioned to neighboring shelters and treatment programs and the camp has seen continued medical and behavioral health support through volunteer clinicians and community partners. Officer Barnes and other public-safety staff were credited with frequent patrols to maintain safety and respond to needs, and public-works staff assist with site maintenance when residents leave.

Councilors asked about cleanliness, covered cooking areas and veterinary care for camp pets. Kenny said the site is "very clean now," acknowledged earlier training and start-up challenges and listed a covered cooking area and additional community support as helpful requests. He reported that most residents seek veterinary care from North Coast Vet and that medical volunteer Dr. Slott visits the site regularly.

Spencer and staff said the current provider contract has several months remaining; staff will return with options for contract extension and any recommended changes. No formal motion to extend was made at the meeting; staff indicated they will report back with a proposal.

Council members expressed appreciation for the program's progress and the staff who support operations. Council also asked staff to consider cost, logistics and safety when evaluating requests such as covered cooking areas and additional services.
