Brooke County Schools honors student musicians and staff, approves routine bus purchase and personnel items

Band director Mr. Leonard called it “a banner year for us, really truly,” and announced a free concert at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 19 at the Rick Taylor Auditorium to showcase the groups.
The recognition segment named students selected for honor bands and those who earned superior festival ratings, and also noted marching-band awards and a Walt Disney World performance. Mr. Leonard told the board the program’s improvements spanned musicians, majorettes and color guard and credited parents, administrators and community volunteers.
The board also recognized six students from the district’s career-technical electrical program who passed the journeyman electrical test and praised the program for saving county taxpayers subcontractor costs while preparing students for skilled careers.
In staff honors, the board introduced Jessica York as the 2027 Brooke County Schools Teacher of the Year, highlighting her 16 years in the district and a classroom achievement in which a class’s mastery score rose substantially over a year. Sonia Clark was named the 2027 Service Personnel of the Year for her long service at Brooke Middle School and for organizing a Thanksgiving food drive and other student supports; the transcript states she “knows 699 students by name,” a figure that may reflect transcription error and is not independently verified here.
On routine business, the board moved through a consent agenda that included permission to purchase a school bus (letter A), approvals under letter B (including a second-grade trip to Jefferson Intermediate School), probationary and service-personnel contract recommendations (mentors, early childhood classroom assistants and athletic volunteer coaches) and approval of current bills. Each of those motions was made, put to a voice vote and carried unanimously.
A board member requested verbal approval for a staff member, Kelly, to attend the required annual child nutrition conference; the board provided a verbal OK and the formal motion will appear on the next agenda. The board announced its next regular meeting for Tuesday, May 26 at 6:00 p.m. (the board plans to switch future meetings to 5:00 p.m.) and adjourned at 6:53 p.m.
