Pittsylvania County School Board recognized dozens of students at its May 12 meeting, honoring valedictorians, salutatorians and SkillsUSA competition winners from schools across the district.
Presenter/administrator remarks listed multiple honorees by school. The Piedmont Regional Governor School named Samuel Van Paine valedictorian and Ava Grace Presley salutatorian. The Academy of Engineering and Technology recognized Kayla Rebecca Hamlet as valedictorian and Jacob Thomas Howard as salutatorian. Chatham High School, Dan River, Gretna, Tunstall and Tulsa high schools also had students honored as valedictorian or salutatorian; administrators read certificates of excellence and congratulated recipients.
The board also acknowledged students who placed at SkillsUSA district and state competitions, including cybersecurity winners cited by the career and technical education director. One elementary fundraiser was highlighted: Kentuck Elementary raised $14,000.52 for the American Heart Association and ranked 22nd in Virginia for total donations, with top student fundraisers named.
Student representatives presented the 'citizenship' character word for May, offered reflections on their year, and incoming student representatives for 2026-27 were recommended and approved by the board.
Superintendent Dr. Stephen Mayhew praised students and staff and noted upcoming end-of-year events including finals and commencement ceremonies.
The recognitions took a substantial portion of the meeting and included staff, parents and community members in attendance; the board thanked administrators and sponsors for supporting the celebrations.
