Background and safety finding: The superintendent said a licensed inspector found serious safety concerns with the existing south-gym bleachers and advised against partial use; the installer warned the district it would assume risk and could jeopardize sovereign-immunity protections if it used bleachers before repairs. The district has contracted replacement bleachers that are scheduled for installation between Sept. 14 and Oct. 2.
Immediate contingency plans: Because the bleachers cannot be extended or used for inclement weather, the district will consider renting 350 chairs (estimated $2,000, plus setup/tear-down costs) or borrowing chairs from neighboring jurisdictions or the career center. The district will also explore using the career center facility for commencement if needed. Athletic schedules have been adjusted for installation timing.
Budget and procurement: Treasurer explained the bleacher expense was charged to the district's athletic facilities master-plan ("billboard") account; the board approved a modification to permanent appropriations to reflect the contract and related items. A separate $11,000 purchase order for 165 AP exams was also approved on the consent agenda.
Next steps: The district plans to proceed with installation this fall and pursue interim seating or alternative venues for commencement and other large events while repairs and replacement proceed.
