Mayor announces Uptown Streetscape open house, outlines summer construction plans

Mayor Steve Patterson announced an open house for the Uptown Streetscape and utility-relocation project for May 19 from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Athens Armory and urged business owners and neighbors to attend.
The open house "is for business owners, citizens who live nearby" and anyone who wants to "speak with the general contractor or talk to city staff about this particular project," Patterson said. The meeting will give residents a chance to ask about traffic detours and timing for work that will affect portions of the uptown area.
Patterson described several other summer infrastructure efforts: a city sewer project that will affect a portion of Richland Avenue and areas near the university campus, a new theater project near Stewart Street, a city fiber project, utilities being moved underground as part of Uptown Utilities, and paving expected at the Columbus Road shared-use path and roundabout by the end of the month. "The map is on the city's website," he said, pointing viewers to detailed detour and phasing information.
Why it matters: the projects will cause temporary street closures, lane restrictions and traffic flagging in parts of Athens and near the university campus; business owners should expect intermittent disruptions and are invited to consult contractors and staff at the open house.
The mayor said the city has prepared an online map for residents and businesses to review project limits and detours. The Uptown Streetscape open house will be held May 19, 3–6 p.m., at the Athens Armory; the city encouraged attendees to bring questions for staff and the general contractor.
