Chico Unified students showcase drama and a bike‑refurbishing project

Chico Unified School District opened its Dec. 18 meeting with student showcases from Chico Jr. High’s drama program and Citrus Elementary’s bike‑refurbishing project.
Principal John Gunderson introduced drama teacher Sonia Hus and several students, who described goals for the program including "confidence, communication, teamwork, creativity and critical thinking" and showed clips and photos from recent productions such as Snow White and The Mustache Melodrama.
At Citrus Elementary, assistant principal Gloria Ginas and teacher Nathaniel Wyan described a long‑running bike program (since 2011) in which students refurbish donated bicycles and donate them to children in the community. Student presenters explained that the project includes journaling, parts identification, letter writing to donors and applied math; one student noted that refurbishing taught practical skills and helped classmates "learn how to use tools".
Organizers invited the public to an open house on Dec. 19 at Citrus Elementary to view student work and the refurbished bikes. Board members praised the student efforts as examples of hands‑on learning and community engagement.
