Henrico County School Board honors students, staff and CTE partner at March 26 meeting

At its March 26 meeting the Henrico County School Board recognized student performers, state athletic champions, division‑wide spelling bee and art show winners, presented the Ray Tate Memorial Award to Fire Chief Jackson Baynard for CTE partnership, and proclaimed April as School Library Month and National Arab American Heritage Month.
The Henrico County School Board used much of its March 26 meeting to recognize students, staff and community partners across academics, arts and athletics.
Dr. Cashwell opened the meeting and introduced fifth‑grade students from Lakeside Elementary School who led the Pledge of Allegiance. Erin Franklin, K‑5 lead music teacher, introduced Gayton Elementary’s Gator Beats drum‑line; the students performed two cadences and received applause.
The board presented the Ray Tate Memorial Award to Henrico County Division of Fire Chief Jackson Baynard for the department’s role supporting Career and Technical Education and launching the HCPS Fire Fighting program. The board also recognized the 2026 division spelling bee champion, Taran Shivkumar of Moody Middle School, who qualified for the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Dozens of elementary artists were introduced and invited to an art‑show reception. The board honored winter sports state champions from multiple high schools and acknowledged athletic accomplishments with listed times, heights and rankings where provided. The board also read a proclamation recognizing April 2026 as School Library Month and a separate proclamation recognizing National Arab American Heritage Month.
Dr. Cashwell highlighted the division’s "Henrico Highlights" including the All‑In student event and presented 15 Heart of Henrico Awards to staff members nominated by students, families and peers for exemplifying core values such as belonging, collaboration, equity, innovation and being student‑focused.
The meeting concluded with the board approving the consent agenda and announcing its next work session for April 16, 2026. The board adjourned the session after the scheduled business.
