District staff presented a proposal to expand and "benchmark" classified and confidential salary ranges so new intermediate steps exist between current ranges. The presenter explained that the existing ranges create large percentage jumps (for example, the jump from range 9 to range 10 can be roughly 30 percent), and the proposed schedule fills blanks so smaller steps (2–3 percent adjustments between adjacent ranges) exist without changing current incumbents’ pay.
The presentation emphasized that the benchmarking would not change current employees’ dollars but would create more placement options for future hires or new positions and reduce the need to create large off-schedule increases. Board members asked whether the new structure would alter existing pay for employees and sought the origin of missing step numbers. In response to questions, a board member moved to table further action so the schedule can be reviewed in more detail; the motion was seconded and the board moved into discussion of the tabled motion.
The board did not adopt the revised schedule at the meeting; staff will return with clarified background and recommended next steps if the board instructs further action.
