The Planning Board reviewed a proposal to permit limited new off‑premises sign locations (billboards) under a revised bylaw and to require a special permit and a development agreement with the Select Board to address monetary compensation. Town planner Jenny Gingrich said mapping by a proponent showed only two potentially conforming locations given state and local spacing rules and that existing state/federal limitations preclude signs along parts of I‑90.
Board members expressed a range of views. A member noted the town could receive roughly $65,000 in revenue but said that aesthetic and community character arguments weighed against introducing billboards along major roadways. The Fire Chief submitted a letter of support that had been forwarded to the board. Because several board members requested additional review and public input, the hearing was continued to March 3 for further deliberation.
No permit or bylaw vote was taken on Feb. 17. The board requested staff provide supplemental analysis about likely locations, revenue estimates and design standards before the next meeting.
