Moorhead Youth Baseball asks board to reopen talks about North-side indoor facility

Dean Meyer, speaking for Moorhead Youth Baseball at the May 14 meeting, asked the Park Advisory Board to recommend that city staff reopen discussions about an indoor training facility on the North Side near the organization's Centennial Park baseball complex.

"We would like to build it up at Centennial Park where our baseball complex is," Meyer said, describing the North Side as the most convenient location for youth teams that already play there. He told the board the project would not require city funding and that the group had "absolutely nothing" requested from the city: "We are taking on the responsibility. We are asking no money from the city whatsoever. Not a dime." Meyer said the group has letters of support from partners including the La Crosse Association and that a private business has indicated it may contribute substantially.

Meyer said the group's lease on their current indoor space expires in about two years and that South-side sites proposed by staff would introduce parking and multi-sport-use limitations. He asked the advisory board to recommend further discussion with staff and other stakeholders about a North-side location that would leverage existing parking, electric and sewer infrastructure near the concession stand.

Board members did not take action on the request at the meeting; the presentation was received as public comment and staff said they would follow up if needed.
