Council approves closure of Cumberland Street for Third Thursday event on May 21

Council approved a one-off street closure for the Third Thursday event series on May 21, 2026. Jay Dietrich explained the economic development department requested the closure of Cumberland Street in both directions from Moore Street to Lee Street to accommodate food trucks, vendors and family activities; the event is scheduled from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM with the closure beginning at 3:00 PM and ending around 8:30 PM.
Staff recommended approval for the May 21 date; council moved, seconded and approved the request by roll call. Council members said the closure will allow more vendor space and enhance the event experience.
Staff said additional Third Thursday closure requests for subsequent months (Junethrough September) will be handled on the consent agenda in future meetings.
