Dr. Reger reported to the Wicomico County Board of Education that the district secured 11 grants in April totaling more than $200,000 to support student programs and staff initiatives.
Highlights Dr. Reger listed included: more than $44,000 from the Lower Shore Workforce Alliance to support the Summer Crew youth-employment program (paying staff and participating students and supporting community-service projects); $150,000 from the Donnie Williams Foundation to fund eight district requests including $16,700 for Wicomico Middle School media-center transformation; nearly $82,000 for Parkside CTE’s criminal-justice program to purchase a Milo VR law-enforcement simulator; $3,000 to Wicomico High School to support a career-jam event; and smaller awards to individual schools for media-center materials and makerspace/3-D printing resources.
Superintendent Dr. Michael Stauffer and staff also recognized three "extra mile" award winners for April: Cynthia Laughlin (custodial/operations contributions), Meredith Miller (district mental-health coordinator who organized staff mental-health activities) and Steve Romano (director of athletics who launched a student athletic-leadership council and communications improvements).
Why it matters: The grants bring targeted funding for student supports, literacy and career-technical resources and expand mental-health and extracurricular opportunities. Board discussion at the meeting was informational; the grants and awards were presented for the board’s awareness and will be included in district records.
