Mountain Men Rendezvous at Fort Buenaventura to include America250 programming

Marty Smith told the Weber County Board of Commissioners on May 12 that organizers will integrate the national America250 commemoration into existing local events, most notably the Fort Buenaventura Mountain Men Rendezvous held over Memorial Day weekend. The organizers said they prefer to embed America250 programming into established celebrations rather than create stand-alone events.
Katie Ransom, who identified herself as captain of the Fort Buenaventura mountain men reenactment group, said the four-day rendezvous will include public demonstrations, traders, competitions and education events for schools. She said the group works with Weber County Parks and Recreation and will produce commemorative medallions this year that feature a mountain man motif on the front and the America250 logo with Ogden/Weber County on the back.
Commissioners praised the reenactors and the site as a community asset, noting activities such as axe-throwing, archery and a disc-golf course woven through the site. One commissioner described Fort Buenaventura as one of the first Anglo settlement sites in the Great Basin and highlighted the event's educational value for elementary students.
Organizers invited commissioners to a photo opportunity and encouraged the public to attend the demonstrations and traders at the rendezvous during Memorial Day weekend. No formal action was required by the commission on the presentation.
The commission then moved on to its consent and action items.
