City wins Safe Routes to School and VR training simulator grants totaling $554,000

City staff told the council on May 11 that Marion secured two grants that will fund pedestrian safety improvements and a virtual reality training simulator for first responders.
Cody, speaking for city staff, said the city was awarded a $250,000 Safe Routes to School grant for the area directly west of Washington School (Mechanic Street). The study last year identified pedestrian activity and sidewalk deficiencies; the grant will fund new sidewalks and repairs identified in that assessment.
Wendy announced the city received a full grant of $304,000 from the Harrison Bruce Foundation to purchase a three-sided Vertra virtual reality training simulator. Wendy said the simulator can use filmed local sites so officers and firefighters can rehearse scenarios in actual Marion locations; she added that other local agencies would be welcome to use the equipment.
Mayor Absher and council members thanked the foundation and staff for pursuing the grants. Staff will proceed with grant implementation and scheduling.
