Committee approves planting of Mount Vernon–sourced black gum on West Campus

DES presented a proposal to plant a black gum tree sourced from George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate on the West Campus to commemorate a national occasion and to complement the Olmsted landscape. The Mount Vernon Foundation agreed to donate and ship the tree; planting and initial interpretation signage would be funded from DS operating funds.
SCC moved and seconded the planting proposal; members voted 'aye' and the plan was adopted. CDAC followed the same motion and also approved the tree planting. DES said it will coordinate with Representative Bell's office and other stakeholders for a ceremony and interpretive signage.
The committees recorded the decision and no further action was taken at this meeting beyond implementing planting logistics and outreach for an interpretive sign and a potential campus event.
