Three concept options presented for Fallen Firefighters Memorial; committee flags sightline and security concerns

Designers presented three initial concepts for the Fallen Firefighters Memorial — dubbed the Crossing, the Embrace and the Room — and described how each option would accommodate names, ceremony functions and circulation.

Presenters said roughly 300 names would be included initially with an expectation of about 7–10 additions per year. The crossing concept was described by stakeholders as the most immersive, with lower opening heights the design team said promote a sense of enclosure; other concepts emphasized axial relationships with the Legislative Building and a more open path system.

Committee members raised concerns about tall memorial walls interfering with cherished sightlines across the campus and about how the design would accommodate children and annual ceremonies with fire trucks on the North Diagonal. Several members urged that campus security staff review enclosed designs for safety and accessibility implications. Presenters said concept‑level cost estimates are being prepared and that schematic design will refine wall heights, circulation and cost items before the committee narrows to a single preferred concept.

Next steps: schematic design will focus on a single preferred option with detailed cost estimating and modelling of sightlines and security considerations; presenters will return with updated cost estimates expected in May and additional modeling to show how each option affects campus views.
