90% design for Cal Anderson memorial presented; construction targeted for 2027–28

Aaron Wiroma of HBB Landscape Architecture presented the 90% design for the Cal Anderson Memorial and answered committee questions.
Wiroma described refinements to the bench (polished seating, rounded edges and stainless‑steel protection around LED lighting), revised railing details to match campus bronze railings, cobble drainage options, and an approximately 6‑by‑6‑by‑6‑foot granite boulder featuring engraved text bands and a Vietnam War medallion. He said stakeholders helped craft the engraved language and that text sizing and placement are under refinement to meet WAC/WACC guidance on memorial text limits.
The team reported that the 90% design has been submitted to DES and that a 100% design will follow with stakeholder review in June and informational review in September. DES plans to bring a decisional presentation in November and anticipates a capital budget request in September to fund full construction, with construction documents and bidding timed to permit an August 2027 construction start and a target dedication in June 2028.
Wiroma said the 90% package showed only minor cost increases, mainly associated with additional electrical conduit routing and security‑camera infrastructure; DES will include a capital budget request in the next cycle. Committee members did not raise substantial objections and no vote on the memorial occurred at the meeting.
