Public Works reports $93,000 snowstorm cost, cemetery mowing contract over budget; plow procurement saves money

Councilmember Carr summarized the Public Works update, saying a recent major snowstorm cost the city $93,000 in response expenses and required more than 1,000 man-hours. The department procured six new snowplows at $14,000 apiece, a per-unit cost Councilmember Carr said represents about a $2,000 savings compared with earlier estimates, and the plows have a significantly reduced lead time of about 180 days.
Carr also reported that cemetery mowing contract bids for Maple Grove and Forest Rose came in at $185,000 against a $150,000 budget, creating an approximate $35,000 shortfall; he said that a $22,000 saving on a new dump truck purchase offsets part of that deficit. Bids for the Arbor Valley Drive and general street-improvement projects were reported as awarded, while the East Sixth Avenue (Fetters Run) bridge replacement project will be re-advertised because bids will be sent back out for rebidding.
Council did not take final budgetary action on these items at the meeting; the report was presented as committee updates and will inform upcoming budget and committee deliberations.
