Committee adopts resolution to develop school climate and culture measurement and improvement plan

Director Benoit, a cosponsor, said the resolution moves school climate work from central office back into individual schools and urged that students be included in decision-making. "We really need to make sure that the students are completely involved in this process," Benoit said.
Superintendent Brenda Casella told the committee the administration supports the resolution and has already begun related work, including early development of reporting metrics, data measures and frameworks designed for regular board review. "The direction outlined in this resolution aligns well with ongoing efforts and will allow the work to move forward in a coordinated manner," she said.
Two members of the public who helped review the draft resolution voiced support during public comment. Larry Hoffman said the resolution should lead to enforceable policy and consistent practice, adding that enforcement should focus on addressing upstream causes rather than punishment. Angela Harris, a teacher and co-chair of her school's culture and climate committee, urged that measurement include student belonging, staff climate, family engagement and equitable outcomes and cautioned that data collection must be paired with adequate funding, staffing and time for implementation.
Director Benoit moved to approve the resolution. The secretary called the roll and recorded four ayes: Director O'Halloran, Director Reza, Director Benoit and Chair Siemsen. The motion passed 4-0.
