Meriwether County weighs renovations and remediation for county buildings, considers morgue cooler and standby generator
Summary
County staff told commissioners remediation is required before renovating an old county building; vendors quoted a 10'x10' body cooler at roughly $23,000–$34,345 and standby generator quotes ranged from about $40,001.93 to more than $77,000. Staff said formal bids and remediation must come first.

County staff on May 11 presented a plan to use part of the general-fund surplus to address needed repairs and remediation at several county facilities, and outlined preliminary quotes for a refrigerated body cooler and a standby generator.
Staff introduced a list of county properties with maintenance needs, including Building C (about 9,200 square feet), 124 North Court Square (the admin building) and the E-911 building. Staff told the board that a deputy administrator’s walk-through identified about 51 windows that need replacement at the court-square building and that carpet, gutters and drainage work are needed in the admin building. "We do need remediation done throughout that building," staff said, recommending a third-party remediation bid before any interior work begins.
Why it matters: staff said the contamination must be remediated before contractors can safely proceed with renovation; until remediation is completed, the county cannot finalize installation or occupancy plans for those spaces.
Chief Steven outlined a proposed renovation for Building A to consolidate logistics, training and several department offices under one roof. He described a roughly 2,100-square-foot training room, proposals to add two showers in each restroom to support training and PT use, a roll-up logistics door for offloading pallets, and AV improvements for the training space. "With us all being in one building, it's gonna make us more efficient as far as the department with communication," he said.
On equipment, staff presented three vendor quotes for a 10-foot-by-10-foot body cooler: roughly $23,000 (shipping included), $34,345 and $27,003.89. Staff also presented three standby-generator quotes, including a low bid around $40,001.93 (with a propane tank installed by the county) and higher quotes near $77,009.30 and about $83,000. Staff said the generator quotes include transfer switches and automatic switchover and that the county will require formal, apples-to-apples bids.
Staff cautioned that remediation must precede any build-out. "We had an independent test come back — they took nine samples — and there is needed remediation," staff reported, saying remediation proposals from local remediators will be advertised and returned to the board.
Next steps: staff will advertise remediation and installation work for bid, collect comparable quotes, and return to the board with a phased cost estimate. The board did not adopt a purchase or appropriate funds during the May 11 session.
Ending: Commissioners asked staff to prepare formal scopes, installation quotes and a remediation plan and to present those documents at a future meeting for the board’s consideration.
