Commission approves recreation of Central Hardware ghost mural with conditions

The Historic Lancaster Commission voted May 21 to approve a 14-by-20-foot recreation of the Central Hardware ghost mural in Center Alley, with conditions intended to preserve original ghost‑sign elements.
Christa Moody, speaking for Sherman Rotary presidents Brad Roach and Kurt Lape, and artist Hilary Eden presented the plan to recreate the mural. Commissioners approved the application on the condition that the vertical “hardware” lettering be restored rather than painted over, that the original fallout shelter sign be reinstalled if it is available rather than repainted, and that paint colors follow the proposed Gay Fad yellow and caviar black palette. The commission allowed minor typeface adjustments to accommodate the restoration.
Chair Bryan Everitt and commissioners emphasized preservation of the original ghost sign elements; City representative Mitch Harden advised there were no legal barriers to re‑erecting the fallout shelter sign. The artist expects work to begin June 2 and conclude June 12, pending final arrangements.
Commissioner Matt Brady abstained from the vote; the motion passed by the remaining commissioners.
