The Board of Equalization unanimously denied two late‑filing extension requests from Chester Joe McConnell during its April 3 meeting. Deputy Assessor Ryan Danhauser presented both cases and explained that in each instance the assessor’s office had mailed notices, received incomplete paperwork, and offered second copies of appeal forms; McConnell failed to timely return the required materials.
In the first matter (hand number 0542717) assessing staff concluded the ‘‘unable to comply’’ criteria were not met because the appellant had multiple opportunities to file and no extreme circumstances were documented. The board voted 5–0 to deny the extension request.
In a second, similar case (PAN 0658504) assessing staff again recommended denial after reviewing the timeline; the board likewise voted 5–0 to deny. For both cases the clerk will mail written decisions to the appellant and to the assessor’s office, which will record the board’s orders and, if applicable, enter the assessor’s roll changes per borough procedure.
Why it matters: The board’s uniform denial underscores the borough’s requirement that incomplete filing or failure to pick up mail does not generally meet the ‘‘unable to comply’’ standard unless supported by medical or other exceptional circumstances. Appellants may pursue further review consistent with borough appeal rights and procedures.
What’s next: The board directed the clerk to mail written findings; the assessor’s office will update its records and proceed with the existing assessment schedule.
