Studio RPV’s Whale of a Day segment marked the Point Vicente Lighthouse’s 100th anniversary and spotlighted restoration efforts and volunteer involvement.
Kip Lueded, a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, said the lighthouse "has flashed over 300,000 times in the hundred years that it has been blinking," and that open houses—staffed by volunteers and auxiliaries—have run since 1992 at no cost to taxpayers. The city approved a commemorative centennial logo and is supporting restoration through special merchandise sales at the PVIC gift shop.
Amy Forte, president and cofounder of the Friends of Point Vicente Lighthouse, said the volunteer group formed to restore the lighthouse so the public can again access the tower and enjoy the view. She said the Friends were staffing information tables at both the Point Vicente Interpretive Center and at the lighthouse during Whale of a Day to inform the public about restoration needs and the lighthouse’s condition, including asbestos and lead-paint issues that currently prevent interior access.
The segment noted that the original Fresnel lens is on display at PVIC while the lighthouse operates with a modern LED beacon. Hosts encouraged viewers to visit PVIC and the lighthouse open houses, typically held the second Saturday of each month.
