The Montgomery County Council conducted interviews on Dec. 2 of three finalists for the interim at‑large council seat vacated by a recent resignation. Candidates Shira Evans, Dr. Henry Lee and Roberto Rodriguez each answered questions from council members on issues ranging from budget stewardship and racial equity to housing and constituent engagement.
Shira Evans emphasized her education and PTA experience, service on the school board and equity work. She told the council she would immediately conduct listening sessions and work closely with staff. "I am prepared day 1 to do this work," Evans said during her interview.
Dr. Henry Lee said his mix of civic, academic and private‑sector experience gives him a wide perspective on county operations. He named the budget, economic development and housing as the three most important issues facing the council and stressed the need for transparency and data‑driven oversight.
Roberto Rodriguez cited 12 years in county government as a regional director and emphasized affordability, immigrant community outreach and public safety. He said he would rely on transparency and evidence when exercising council oversight.
Council members posed multiple follow‑ups on RESJ (Racial Equity and Social Justice) implementation, budget tradeoffs and constituent engagement; candidates described how they would use staff resources and community outreach to inform decisions. The council noted that a final appointment is scheduled for Dec. 9, when members will vote on the candidate to fill the at‑large vacancy.
