Wayne County Community College trustees preview University Center expansion to Grosse Pointe Farms council

Representatives of Wayne County Community College presented plans on May 20 to expand and modernize the University Center, telling the Grosse Pointe Farms City Council the project will repurpose nearby buildings, create a more campus'like environment and add program capacity.

Trustee Roy Edmonds (speaker 8) said the college has acquired several nearby properties and will renovate interiors and exteriors to improve connectivity and program delivery. A presenting colleague (speaker 12) said the ambition is to allow students in surrounding communities to complete programs without leaving Wayne County and highlighted plans for a new Dallas technology program housed in the Dallas Building.

Council members asked whether the project would affect local taxes; the presenters responded that the expansion would not increase local taxes and that the college is exploring programmatic and scheduling changes to allow more community access. Councilors also asked about enrollment numbers for the campus; presenters said the district serves more than 55,000 credit and noncredit students systemwide but did not provide a campus-specific headcount that night.

Public commenters voiced support for the project and thanked college representatives for outreach. Council members welcomed the proposal and suggested continued coordination, including potential joint programming and outreach to local schools.
