The Mehlville R-IX Board of Education on May 14 approved the 2026-27 memorandum of understanding with Mehlville health professionals (MAPA), endorsing new language that adds tuition reimbursement, a classified-employee stipend, and clarified work-year adjustments for nurses.
Marissa Barham, Porter Elementary school nurse and the district's MAPA chief negotiator, described several negotiated changes: addition of Section 4.13 establishing tuition reimbursement for nurses who have served one year and return the following year (up to nine credit hours per year, maximum of six credit hours per semester) paid from a $6,000 annual pool with a $1,500 per-nurse cap; and Section 4.14 creating a building classified employee-of-the-year stipend (up to $1,000) to support professional development at regional, state or national conferences.
Barham also said the MOU updates nurse work year language to account for pre-school-year duties and adds limited additional hours at the beginning of the year (an extra 7 hours and 20 minutes, with overload pay) and clarified remote work days. Dr. Shannon Pike, assistant superintendent of human resources, said the MOU language aligns with Fair Labor Standards Act guidance and that MAPA ratified the agreement May 11.
The board approved the MOU by unanimous vote on a motion to ratify the Mehlville Health Professionals memorandum of understanding for the 2026-27 academic year.
What this means: The new provisions aim to support nurse professional development and provide modest tuition assistance and stipends, and they formalize limited additional time and remote work days around the start of school. Payroll and HR will implement the new language following standard procedures.
Next steps: Administration will implement the MOU provisions for the coming academic year and communicate any operational changes to building principals and nursing staff.
