The Fremont City Council authorized the mayor to sign an application for an FAA grant to replace the airport taxiway after a presentation from Public Works Director Dan Gillis.
Gillis said the project originally was budgeted at $2.7 million but expanded to about $5.1 million after design work showed connections to the runway needed to be moved to meet FAA standards; the enlarged scope also added replacement of older incandescent taxiway lights (some inoperable) and drainage improvements. He said the FAA would contribute about 95% of eligible costs while the state (NDOT) would contribute about 2% (capped at roughly $64,000). Gillis said the city’s share after cost growth is approximately $192,750 and that staff would perform required budget adjustments.
Council members expressed support for capturing the high federal share and for investing in airport safety. After asking for public comment (none), the council approved Resolution 2026-093 authorizing the mayor to apply for the FAA grant; the motion carried 8–0.
