District to put updated postpartum, foster/adoption leave and FMLA calendar on next agenda
Summary
HR proposed draft changes to parental leave to comply with recent state law (adding adoption/foster provisions and increasing foster leave to four weeks) and recommended changing the district’s FMLA calculation to a rolling 12-month method; staff will bring these policies to the business meeting with an effective date of July 1.

Jordan School District HR staff on May 12 presented draft policy changes to align district leave policies with recent state legislation.
HR administrator Brent Murch explained the key changes: adoption and foster-care leave would be specifically added to the parental/postpartum policy, foster care leave can be taken intermittently and offers up to four weeks of paid leave (the law requires splitting foster leave when both parents work for the same employer). Presenters said adoption leave remains separate and that district staff had worked with legal counsel to reflect the statutory language.
HR also proposed moving the district’s Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) method from a fixed July–June contract-year calendar to a rolling 12-month (look-back) method commonly used by employers. Staff said the change would prevent stacking leave across contract years and reduce conflicts with long-term disability and payroll administration.
Board members asked clarifying questions about foster/adoption sequencing, intermittent leave, and effective dates. Staff noted the law takes effect July 1 and recommended the board adopt the policy with an effective date of July 1.
Next steps: staff will place both policies—postpartum/adoption/foster leave and the FMLA-calendar change—on the next business meeting for board action with an effective date of July 1, 2026.
