Lancaster parks board tables request for Ohio Historical Marker honoring Jacob Parrott

The Lancaster Board of Park Commissioners on April 1 tabled consideration of a request to place an Ohio Historical Marker in Veterans Park honoring Jacob Parrott, whom the request described as a Fairfield County native and the nation’s first Medal of Honor recipient. Board member Kristina Crites moved to table the item, and Bob Lovell seconded; the motion passed unanimously.

Superintendent Steve Gayfield told the board staff had received a request for an additional monument at Veterans Square but had not yet received full documentation. Crites said the request came from the Veterans' Service Commission and that the commission would cover the marker’s cost and asked the board to consider placement in Veterans Park.

Board members discussed the request briefly and opted to table the agenda item to allow staff time to collect the missing details needed for site review and formal approval. The board took the action as a motion to table rather than making a placement decision at the April meeting.

Votes at the meeting included approval of the March meeting minutes and ratification of Parks Department expenses; both motions passed unanimously. The meeting adjourned after the scheduled business.
