Board accepts $65,000 HUD playground grant, reallocates $50,000 to Mary Burnham Park

The Lancaster Board of Park Commissioners voted unanimously March 4 to accept HUD grant funding to replace playground equipment and to reallocate city budget funds to speed additional replacements.
Superintendent Steve Gayfield told the Board the department had budgeted about $50,000 this year to replace swing sets at Utica and Glassco Parks. Grants Manager Michelle McCrady reported $65,000 in HUD grant funds are available for those two parks and Mayer Park because they are located in lower-income areas. The Board voted to accept the HUD funding, which would allow the department to direct the previously budgeted $50,000 to another park project.
Gayfield asked specifically for permission to use the $50,000 already in the parks budget to replace playground equipment at Mary Burnham Park, where staff reported slide steps are broken. Commissioner Bob Lovell moved to use the budgeted funds for Mary Burnham and Commissioner Kristina Crites seconded; the motion passed unanimously.
The Board’s action will fund replacements at Utica, Glassco and Mayer using the HUD grant and dedicate the budgeted $50,000 to Mary Burnham. The meeting record does not include vendor selections, a construction schedule, or an implementation timeline; staff indicated they may work with grant managers and community partners on procurement and fundraising for related projects.
