Wendell board adopts street closure, Vision 0 endorsement, streetlight amendment and brownfield surveys

Streetlight agreement The board authorized the town manager to sign the sixth amendment to the upgraded streetlight-reimbursement agreement with the Wendell Falls Community Association, covering Phase 10a and related work. Staff said the HOA pays for decorative fixtures and the town reimburses its standard-light portion; the funds to cover town obligations were included in next year’s budget.
Vision 0 endorsement Planning staff requested adoption of a resolution endorsing the regional Blueprint for Safety (Vision 0) and committing Wendell to a goal of eliminating roadway deaths and serious injuries. Mr. McCarthy explained that having a qualifying safety action plan and identifying a high-injury network helps the town compete for federal grants such as Safe Streets for All. He noted Wendell has a corridor on Business 64 identified on the high-injury network and that more current TEAS crash data can be requested from NCDOT. The board adopted resolution R-13-20-26 by voice vote.
Brownfield task orders The board approved Task Order 27 (Phase 1 environmental site assessment for 319 Allegro Road) and Task Order 28 (limited asbestos and lead-based paint survey for 0 Old Quarry Road). Staff said the town purchased the Old Quarry parcel for potential park use and a partially collapsed building was identified in the Phase 1; the asbestos/lead survey budget is capped at $8,730.
Other actions and recognitions The board recognized Wendell Middle School teacher Kayla Ramos and the Wendell Police Department for receiving a Mothers Against Drunk Driving state award. The meeting ended with commissioners’ reports highlighting local volunteer projects and Siemens’ microgrid and expansion in Wendell.
