Residents urge RNCC to back a citywide campaign against illegal fireworks

Janice Haugan, a Richmond resident, asked the RNCC on May 11 to help stop illegal fireworks by distributing signs, supporting enforcement and amplifying public‑service announcements.
Haugan said illegal street fireworks pose injury, fire and environmental risks, and she described ongoing coordination with council members, police and fire staff, and KCRT for outreach. "The street fireworks have gotten more powerful and dangerous," she said, and she asked neighborhood councils to help display yard and window signs to publicize reporting numbers ahead of July 4.
The resident noted the police plan to use drones again as first responders for July and that the fire department and media partners are preparing education and signage. Haugan said she will send materials in June and asked neighborhood councils to distribute them to members and on social platforms.
RNCC members thanked Haugan and noted the city will make signs available at City Hall and police stations closer to the holiday.
