Fire department reports declines in structure, encampment and vehicle fires; announces May 30 evacuation drill

A deputy fire chief for Richmond presented April incident totals to RNCC on May 11, reporting 1,084 incidents for the month and describing reductions in several categories compared with the previous month.
The deputy chief said structure fires declined roughly 14% from the prior month, encampment fires decreased by about 40% and vehicle fires were down more than 60% in the same interval. He said the department installed smoke alarms in 35 homes in a recent "Sound the Alarm" outreach with the American Red Cross and is running recruit and cert academies that will graduate trainees in mid‑May.
The fire department also announced a neighborhood evacuation drill on May 30 from 9 a.m. to noon covering May Valley, El Sobrani Hills, Greenbrier, Castro Heights and Carriage Hills; the drill will review community warning systems, evacuation zones and preparedness resources in coordination with neighboring departments and the West County Fire Safe Council.
Residents asked whether Port Chester could be added to next year’s drill rotation; the deputy chief said the department rotates drill sites and will have the Office of Emergency Services contact the neighborhood to discuss next steps.
