A Hawaii County policy committee on public works and mass transit voted 7-0 to forward Bill 109 to the full council with a favorable recommendation, a move the committee said will extend an existing no-parking zone on Hinalani Street to Anini Street.
The bill, which Clerk Cook read into the record, would amend Hawaii County Code (chapter 24, article 10, division 5) to prohibit parking at any time on Hinalani Street from Queen Kaahumanu Highway to Anini Street. Council member Inaba is listed as the bill’s introducer.
Council member Nava, speaking to the committee, said the extension is intended to cover the area fronting the new Kauhale Iikekulaoka housing project. "Since move in, there have been numerous cars, parked along the highway causing or along Hinalani Street causing, visibility issues for motorists entering or exiting, the housing complex," Nava said. He added, "We even had some makeshift garages with pop up tents and cars being fixed there." The council member said the Department of Public Works had already erected signs and that community policing in Kona and Director Segawa of Public Works support the measure.
Chair James Eustace called for a voice vote and the clerk announced seven in favor, with no members voting against. Clerk Cook identified Council members Kleinfelder and Villegas as absent. Chair Eustace adjourned the committee at 12:08 PM.
The committee’s action forwards the measure to the full Hawaii County Council for consideration; no final ordinance was enacted at this meeting.
