Commissioners split over proposal to use county forum for 'nuclear family' proclamation and public education

Commissioner Fox told the commission he intends to bring forward a proclamation similar to one the Tennessee House and the governor adopted declaring June to be "nuclear family month," and said he may also schedule a separate 'March Madness' discussion or business item. "It's nuclear family. He's proclaiming in the house the Tennessee house is proclaiming, June to be nuclear family month," Fox said, and said he was planning to circulate a similar proclamation and seek signatures.

Several commissioners urged caution about using the commission dais for broad cultural or religious education. Commissioner Hill said he respected the subject but asked Fox to "please, reconsider this as a discussion topic" on the regular agenda and suggested a workshop or an optional educational session instead. Hill and other commissioners said the commission's regular meeting is for county business and that topics likely to attract strong public participation or division are better handled in separate forums.

Fox defended the idea as proactive policymaking, citing violent incidents elsewhere as reasons to consider community standards before a crisis. He said public policy can be preventive and said he intended to proceed, though possibly at a later meeting. The chair asked Fox to post his plan on the commission forum in a timely way so members and members of the public would know whether the item would proceed.
