Executive committee backs DNR purchase of 77 acres in Minocqua, forwards resolution to County Board

The Oneida County Executive Committee voted 4–2 on May 6 to forward a resolution supporting the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources’ proposed purchase of about 77 acres in the Town of Minocqua using Knowles‑Nelson Stewardship Program funds.
Chairman Billy Fried moved to forward the resolution and said the Town of Minocqua had already approved a related measure, four to one, that included coordination on public parking, motorized vehicle routes and development of dry hydrants to support local fire protection. Fried told the committee those additions were intended to ensure local coordination if the DNR acquires the parcels.
Committee member Scott Holewinski objected to removing residential property from the tax rolls. "I am against using tax dollars to buy residential property and take it off the tax rolls," he said during discussion. Holewinski and Debbie Condado voted against forwarding the resolution; Michael Tautges, Dan Hess and Russ Fisher voted in favor. Cushing was absent.
The resolution, as presented to the committee, describes the parcels (MI‑1083 and MI‑1086) as contiguous land with two‑bank frontage along the Tomahawk River within the Upper Tomahawk River corridor and states that acquisition would protect waters that connect to the Willow Flowage, an Outstanding Resource Water. The resolution cites Wis. Stats. 23.0917(5t)(b) in support of the use of Knowles‑Nelson Stewardship funds.
By forwarding the resolution, the committee placed the matter on track for consideration by the full County Board, where members may amend or approve it. The Executive Committee’s vote was recorded as 4 Aye, 2 Nay, 1 Absent.
