House Finance Committee reviews bill to create fire station grant fund

Margo Youngberg, staff to Senator Stedman, told the committee that SB140 "establishes a matching grant program with the Department of Commerce, Community and Economic Development, which would provide funding for up to 50% of the total project cost for the construction or renovation of fire stations." She added the bill "establishes the fire station grant fund as a separate fund within the department designed to receive future legislative appropriations," but it does not allocate construction funds now.
Nicole Sam, operations manager at the Division of Community and Regional Affairs, presented the fiscal note and said the bill carries a 0 fiscal note (control code BIWKLowercaseP). Sam told the committee the division would need to adopt regulations for the program but that those regulatory tasks could be combined with other planned work and the division does not anticipate an ongoing fiscal impact or the need for additional resources to administer the grant program.
The committee received no in-room or online public testimony on SB140. Co-chair Foster set an amendment deadline for SB140 of Thursday, May 14 at 5 p.m., and instructed that amendments be submitted to the committee staff. No vote or further action was taken at the session.
