Lewis County schedules March 3 public hearing on opening two county roads to restore trail connections

Jackie Mahoney, director of recreation, forestry and parks for Lewis County, said the county will hold a public hearing and vote on March 3 at 5:00 p.m. at the courthouse to consider local laws to open County Route 49 (Byron's Corners Road) and County Route 47 (Fish Creek Road).
Mahoney said the proposed openings are intended to restore connections between existing trails where access was lost after other corridors closed. She described County Route 49 as the link between Young's Trail and Man's Trail and County Route 47 as the segment that would reconnect Fish Creek Road to the Nell Trail and Tugville Hideaway.
The director said staff have been reaching out to landowners and working with an ad‑hoc committee, which includes Jeff Nolan, to identify property owners who could grant access. Mahoney said some landowners contacted were willing to consider access but that others have not yet replied; she said outreach and negotiation are ongoing.
Mahoney also told the group the county will bring maps to the March 3 meeting so residents can see the proposed openings and that additional sections of Fish Creek Road could be considered later as negotiations progress.
No formal vote occurred at the roundtable; Mahoney presented the schedule and asked clubs and stakeholders to review the route maps ahead of the March 3 public hearing.
