East Hartford council approves application for state CIF funding to replace Fire Station 2

The Town of East Hartford will seek state Community Investment Fund assistance for a replacement of Fire Station 2 after the council authorized Mayor Connor S. Martin to file an application.
"Fire Station 2 at 1718 Main Street is nearly 100 years old," Angie Parkinson (speaker 7) told the council, urging pursuit of CIF funds to reduce the local cost of construction and to ensure the station is gender‑inclusive and can house modern apparatus.
Chief Munson (speaker 9) said the project is about "30 to 40% of the way through the design work," with stakeholder engagement continuing; he described a strategy of layering federal earmarks, state funds and other sources to lower bonding needs for taxpayers. He also noted that apparatus procurement costs and lead times have risen sharply, giving a recent vendor quote of about $1.3 million for a vehicle that cost roughly $895,000 three and a half years ago.
Council members voiced support and noted the design progress improves the town’s case for funding. The CIF application is due June 5, and council approved the resolution to allow the mayor to execute the application and related documents.
Councilors also discussed broader procurement challenges in the fire‑apparatus market and the town’s plan to seek multiple funding streams before construction.
