Willmar council adopts charter amendment to align petition requirements with Secretary of State rules

Robert Scott, City Attorney, said the changes are largely housekeeping to ensure petitions that could trigger special elections meet state-prescribed formatting requirements (for example, font size, number of signatures per page and page titles). "The amendments would have the effect of just striking what's in the city charter and adopting essentially verbatim the secretary of state requirements," Scott said.
The Charter Commission recommended that the council approve the ordinance. The council voted to adopt the ordinance (recorded 9 ayes, 0 noes) and later moved to publish by summary (recorded 8 ayes, 0 noes).
What happens next: the ordinance will be published by summary as directed by the council; because this is a charter amendment, it requires the unanimous concurrence described in the charter for adoption procedures.
