The Pawtucket School Committee approved a 4% increase to coaching stipends for the fall, winter and spring seasons, an adjustment the district said had not occurred in 16 years.
A presenter speaking for athletics said coaches "don't generally coach for the money" but that coaches serve as mentors and an increase was appropriate to show appreciation. The district noted the increase would cost about $11,000 and affect roughly 100 coaches.
The motion to approve the stipend increase was made by Miss Fernandes and seconded by Miss Bonolo and Miss Grant; the motion passed on roll-call vote.
Committee members asked for a more regular review cadence so stipend levels are not left unadjusted for long periods and discussed parity with comparable neighboring districts.
