Jeremy Bowski, training chief and C‑shift commander for the Laramie Fire Department, described the department's training facility and said local six‑penny sales‑tax funding made recent upgrades possible while a 2026 six‑penny vote would be needed to build a new Fire Station One.
Bowski said the facility includes "a drill tower, a burn building, and then we have a classroom," and that those features let firefighters and EMTs maintain skills needed for rare but critical incidents. He said crews train at the site regularly: "We try to be out here as much as we can... once in the two days that we're working, we're out here at the drill grounds either doing some type of exercise or skill‑based training and then or some type of EMS training."
He framed regular training as central to safety and service: "We like to say that safety is kind of a choice, right? It's prepared people. It is proficient people that really can provide for their safety and safety of others." Bowski said the site supports a wide range of technical work, including "fire attack, search, obviously, hazmat, EMS... technical rope rescue, trench confined spaces."
On facility improvements and funding, Bowski said older structures were removed and new features — expanded classroom space, a large bay and restrooms, a two‑story burn building and a four‑/five‑story tower — were added and "was funded by the six penny tax." He added, "without the sixth penny, we could never do, never afford, we'd never have a training facility like this... it would be years and years before we could ever think of even having a new fire station one."
Bowski said a successful 2026 six‑penny vote would provide the ability to build a new Fire Station One. He also emphasized that the training facility helps crews stay ready for complex, low‑frequency incidents and supports the department's ability to serve the community.
The remarks were delivered as part of the meeting record; no formal vote or action on these items was recorded in the transcript.
