A Lakewood police representative told the Public Safety Advisory Committee that several categories of crime have declined in recent reporting. The presenter said the city is seeing an "overall crime reduction of 28%," with robberies down 32%, motor vehicle thefts down 67%, larcenies down about 33.2%, burglaries down 20% and crimes against persons down about 11%.
The presenter also reported a 40% drop in homicides, a 7.4% decline in assaults and a 44% reduction in sex crimes, while noting that forcible sex crimes were up 26% relative to the prior period. "The Lakewood Police Department was selected amongst several departments ... they'll be doing a profile of our department next year," the presenter said, describing an upcoming video distribution through the national network.
Committee members were asked to help support the department as it prepares for the 2025-26 budget cycle; the presenter said the department will go before city council on the 9th for budget discussions. The speaker emphasized continued community engagement and assistance in crime-prevention efforts.
No formal votes were taken during the update. Committee members thanked the presenters and were invited to follow up with the department for additional detail or resources.
