The board’s finance committee reported a mix of positive and cautionary budget news during the meeting. Committee members said a renegotiated Cops and Schools contract will produce an estimated cost savings of about $122,000 between the budget and the contract, a reduction the committee recommended the board approve.
At the same time, committee members flagged a projected budget deficit driven largely by recent staffing and salary commitments. The finance report noted the likely need to move funds from non-salary lines to cover shortfalls and that the district will prepare budget projections for 2025–26. Committee members said they plan to explore additional grant opportunities and ‘‘look outside the box’’ to reduce the fiscal gap.
The committee also presented a vendor policy cost analysis comparing Strauss (current provider) with the New Jersey School Boards Association offering. Committee members said Strauss specializes in policy updates while NJ School Boards provides broader services; the committee tabled a decision and recommended further analysis before switching providers.
During discussion, board members suggested outreach to Little Egg Harbor Township officials about possible financial support for the Cops and Schools program, describing policing in schools as a community effort and noting the department’s contribution.
The board approved the finance items on the consent agenda by roll call vote. Board members were briefed that state funding levels remain uncertain for the next fiscal year and that staff will return with more detailed options during the budget process.
The board will continue budget planning ahead of the 2025–26 cycle and monitor state funding developments.
