Board honors retiring coaches; accepts donations and approves student-program stipends

The Galena City School District board opened its meeting with routine items and student reports, then paused to hear a tribute to two retiring football coaches.
Guest speaker Mr. Highland addressed the board to honor Tim and David, recounting their years of service—Tim for about 34 years and David for about 29—and their contributions to coaching and the community. Highland said the district is planning a plaque presentation after a basketball game and a reception to recognize their service.
The board also approved several donations and program staffing requests. By roll call the board accepted a $500 donation from Jordis Mutual Insurance Company for the GEMS book-vending machine, a $1,000 gift from Tara and Derek Dugan for the wrestling program and a $500 donation from the Galena Art and Recreation Center for the football program. The board approved discretionary stipends and roles—including an American Sign Language club and a weight-room coordinator position—to provide supervised programming and individualized workouts for students.
All consent-agenda items, donations and discretionary positions were approved unanimously. The board took the actions during the regular meeting and did not change program scope beyond approving staffing and funding.
